Garden update 2011

Two posts in the one day - unprecedented! I've been trying to knock the garden into shape. Got broad beans, peas, garlic, onions and potatoes in the ground. Tomatoes are doing well in pots. Veggie seedlings up include Gortahork cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli, lettuce, courgette, patty pan squashes, basil and parsley. Still waiting for chillis (think we may have used dud seed), dill (do.), and runner beans (not long planted and starting to peep). Just planted globe artichokes. Love, love, love having our own artichokes. I've never seen them for sale in a shop in Ireland, except for Donnybrook Fair on Morehampton road, when I lived there and it was my local shop. For some reason, they love our windy, salty garden and thrive in it. Outside, waiting for chard and beetroot, planted today only.

To do - plant lots of radish seeds! I'm hankering for their seasonal yumminess! And I'm going to dig and rake the bed for the carrots again before sowing - just to be sure! Also, plant leeks, possibly parsnips and continue the successional sowing of lettuce, peas, spring onions and beetroot.

Flower seeds up and doing well include cosmos, antirrhinum, echinacea, sweet peas and woad. I don't really grow many annuals and I even like to bring on my own perennials fro seed, like the echinacea. Hoping the calendula and nasturtium will self seed again and look after themselves.

Harvesting loads of rhubarb, overwintered chard and cabbages and purple sprouting broccoli. I recommend the purple sprouting heartily. It will convert even seasoned broccoli haters! We look forward to it every year. So buttery, sweet and tender.

Will post some pictures soon of all the seed activity!
