Yesterday's post made it seem as if all was very rosy in paradise. I omitted to mention that our soft fruit was a wash out this year. The birds got everything. Redcurrants, blackcurrants, raspberries, gooseberries. Worst harvest ever. We're going to be relying on the blackberries this year, which is going to be an amazing crop after all the fantastic sunshine here. On the plus side, we had a bumper harvest of rhubarb, it's our first year having damsons and we have a nice few apples. Top fruit providing some solace. And we are firmly resolved to have a fruit cage in place to twart the thieves next year. They have far more patience than us and get up much earlier, so we're always going to be at the losing end of this battle, unless we take radical measures - which, by the way, don't involve recalibrating our circadean clocks and standing guard with the air rifle in the predawn chill. What kind of life would that be anyway?

Garden update 2010 - August

This year our garden is probably the most productive it's ever been. The photo shows a days harvest! More courgettes than we can eat or give away, lots of potatoes, chard, onions, garlic, lettuce, peas, broad beans, runner beans. Meals these days consist of various permutations of these veggies. Lunch today was mackeral (caught by a friend) for him, homemade felafels for me, spinach (chard!), parsley & courgette patties, broad beans, potatoes, plain boiled with just butter and salt. A wonderful seasonal homegrown bountiful feast!
